Στην είσοδο της πόλης, στην πλατεία των Αγίων Θεοδώρων, βρίσκεται η πολυθρύλητη κρήνη του Οιδίποδα, στην οποία λέγεται  πως ξέπλυνε τα πατροκτόνα χέρια του μετά το φόνο του Λάιου. Η κρήνη ανακατασκευάστηκε το 1902.

Μέχρι πριν λίγες δεκαετίες το ρέμα του Αη Γιάννη έδινε ζωή σε ένα νερόμυλο, ερείπια του οποίου στέκουν ακόμη, συνιστώντας ένα αραχνοΰφαντο νήμα που δένει το χθες με το σήμερα, ένα σήμερα το οποίο κυλάει άνυδρο όπως και η κρήνη.

​At the entrance of the city of Thebes, at the square of St. Theodore, stands the legendary fountain of Oedipus. At this fountain it is said that Oedipus washed his hands after having killed his own father Laius. The fountain was reconstructed in 1902. Until a few decades back, St. John’s stream was giving life to an existing watermill, the ruins of which are still remaining there, unfortunately without any water now to evince its previous use but still faintly connecting it to its past
