Polygyra

Polygyra is a region of Thebes which expands along the west side of Cadmeia. Nowadays, in Polygyra a Lyceum and a Gymnaseum of the city are located. Near the Gymnaseum, an archaeological site mostly unknown has been excavated.

Allegedly, in the mythology this is the place where Polynices and Eteocles, the two siblings, fought each other. Furthermore, Polygyra is a sacred place in antiquity, where goddess Hera nursed young Heracles.

The region is also used in the tragedy of Sofocleus' Antigone.
