Isminos Hill
Isminos Hill is one of the seven hills of Thebes, which is well-known as seven-hilled and seven-gated city. In the modern city, Isminos Hill is announced an archaeological site, but lacks everyday life.
Isminos Hill is located between Ilektrai Gates and the cemetery of Aghios Loukas, at the ancient exit of the city to Athens. Today, the street passing-by is a main artery in everyday city service.
On the hill, the oldest temple probably dedicated to Apollo Ismenius was built in the 9th century B.C., and before that, remains of a geoetric and an ahaic one have been found. A festival called Daphnephoria was celebrated every ninth year in honour of Apollo Ismenius.
The name of Apollo Ismenius comes from the Ismenus River which crosses the hill, and it is considered to be one of the main rivers-streams that created the egg-shaped acropolis of Kadmeia, along with Dirkes and Chrissoroas streams.
