Dirce's stream and fountain
Dirce's stream is one of the streams that originated the egg-shaped hill, where afterwards the Cadmeian acropolis was located. The other two main streams are Chrissoroas and Ismenus.
In the middle of the acropolis, there is the Dirce's fountain. Mythologically, this is the place where was the Dragon's cave was, protecting the fountain, and the place where the Dragon was killed by Cadmus, the city's founder.
Dirce's fountain was directly outside the gates of Thebes, called Ypsistai.
Today, there is still a road leading in and out of the modern city, without even a sign reminiscing of the location of the gates.
